Climatronics Corporation’s TACMET II™ “no moving parts” weather sensing system is included on a new Hazardous Material/Response Unit (HMRU) robot for Homeland Security.
Chosen for its compact size, rugged construction and performance in numerous military programs, the TACMET II met the design requirements for an on-board meteorological sensor for this robot built for Homeland Security and law enforcement agencies worldwide. Other applications include local EPA and fire rescue HAZMATresponse, fire weather, mobile air traffic control support, NBC detection support, or any situation requiring a highly mobile, easily deployable general weather station.
The HMRU was designed for localized Nuclear Biological Chemical (NBC) and Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) detection and material removal. The meteorological information is necessary to help to categorize and determine the state of various agents and possibly the dispersion of agents in uncontained situations. Each of the four specialized sensors, meteorological, chemical, radiation and photo ionization, is mounted on the robot via quick disconnect brackets. The entire sensor platform is compatible with Smiths Detection MARK V and Mini-Andros robots, and is adaptable to other robot platforms. The robot data is telemetered back to the robot control position which can be up to a kilometer away.
The TACMET II weather sensor requires no routine maintenance and is designed to withstand and operate over a broad range of environmental conditions. It reports wind speed, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity (dew point is calculated), and pressure. Climatronics can incorporate other sensors for specific applications. The TACMET II has a built-in flux gate compass so the sensor requires no alignment for wind direction orientation.
